New SYL position on the Reconciliation

Press Release

In regard to the forthcoming Somali reconciliation conference planned and organized by the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) we the New SYL deem it to be misleading, inappropriate, and above all it is a detrimental. It will be used as a platform to deviate from the authentic path needed to be pursued in order to achieve a genuine reconciliation conference. Some of the TFG hierarchy stand to loose some ground with the outcome of the latter, therefore justifying their adamancy in sticking with the current plan conceived, designed, and led by the TFG themselves. Nevertheless it is only bound to be failures from off start at best and at worst deny the Somali people the chance to reconcile in a true manner.

The opportunity to create a desirable vehicle towards a genuine reconciliation among the Somalis stands out today, and it should not be left alone to the TFG. The concerned parties and the outside players, notably the AU, EC and US government, should make use of this occasion to set out plans and means for a reconciliation conference that is all inclusive and bound to succeed in producing an acceptable governance. The TFG though nominal in a sense does not harbor the status of a national central government and in actual fact does no longer comprise of its original stakeholders which was the reason for its establishment. Hence minimizing its ‘value’ as an entity to call for and convene a reconciliation government.

The reconciliation should be among the Somalis who have major political differences in concepts, clan based conflicts, the nationalist anti-Ethiopian groups and the pro-Ethiopian group the (TFG). In regards to the current reconciliation: the TFG and the current reconciliation organizers are not calling to reconcile different groups; they are creating bogus opponents in search of a bogus legitimacy, therefore renders this reconciliation as bogus, unless it’s restructured from this failing path.
